Serving on BCTA's Board of Directors

An important function of the bylaws is to establish rules and responsibilities for our Board of Directors, which provides guidance and expertise for development of BCTA’s position and policies on the wide range of industry issues.

Individuals from operating member companies may apply to become a Director as vacancies arise, usually in the early spring prior to our Annual General Meeting each June.

Directors serve for one year (as of their election at the AGM), while the “officers” of the association (the Chairperson, 1st Vice-Chair, 2nd Vice-Chair, and Secretary-Treasurer) serve for two.

To qualify for a position on the Board, you must:

  • be a BCTA operating member in good standing

  • hold a management position in the company you represent

  • have an interest in motor carrier industry policy issues and promoting BCTA

  • be prepared to devote the time necessary to prepare for and actively participate in Board meetings and attend other activities from time to time

  • be able to work in a team

  • be able to put industry interests ahead of company interests

  • be willing to actively recruit new members

Board or other related experience is an asset. Please note that Municipal, Shipper and Alumni members are not eligible to serve on BCTA’s Board. In addition, Associate members who serve on the Board are selected by the Associate Executive Committee and are not part of the Board nomination process.

How frequently does the Board meet?

  • There are seven meetings per year, including the first of the term at BCTA’s AGM & Management Conference in June. The next is in September, with others following at 6 to 8 week intervals.

  • Meetings are generally held on Thursdays from 2 to 4 pm at the BCTA office in Langley and may include a guest speaker.

  • Directors must attend at least 50 percent of meetings, with consideration for those who must travel. Two weeks prior to each meeting, they must review a 30 – 50 page meeting package. Because there may be a maximum of 38 board members at meetings, Board meetings cannot be attended through video or teleconferencing.

Nomination process

BCTA’s Board Nominating Committee reviews all applications. In addition to looking for candidates that meet key requirements, the Committee seeks a balance among geographic representation and company size and specialization for the Board.

How to apply

We notify members of opportunities to apply for a position on the Board in our Bulletin newsletter, including any guidance required and links to the application form.  Watch the Bulletin for updates.
