On December 11, 2020, BCTA wrote to ICBC in support of reinstating rate class 919 for the motor coach industry.

Moving motor coaches to/from rate class 919, which is exempt from basic insurance, would allow BC motor coach companies to insure a vehicle for one day at a time and/or on a pay-as-you-go basis, as permitted under ICBC COVID-19 relief efforts that expired on August 20, 2020. Reinstating this rate class is critical to the survival of motor coach companies, as it minimizes overhead expenses while demand is sparse during the pandemic but still provides employment opportunities for motor coach staff where feasible.

In our letter we noted that, given the immense revenue loss being suffered by motor coach operations—averaging $141.5 million industry-wide from April to October 2020—the industry is unlikely to survive the effect of the pandemic without assistance from government and government agencies.
