We’ve launched a letter writing campaign to ensure BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure understands the depth of the industry’s opposition to an eight-lane tunnel replacement for the George Massey Tunnel, as well as the additional delays in development this crossing option represents.
BCTA is therefore asking motor carriers who use this crossing to write to the Honourable Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, to urge her not to adopt the eight-lane immersed tube tunnel, which was recently endorsed by the Metro Vancouver Board. BCTA continues to support a bridge option with sufficient capacity to meet future demand for goods movement, including TDG.
We have created a template letter for members to send to Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevena that echoes concerns expressed by BCTA President and CEO Dave Earle’s editorial, “Why Trucking Can’t Support an 8-Lane Tunnel Replacement.” The template letter cites the limitations of an eight-lane tunnel for the road transportation industry related to safety, congestion and unreliability, and how this impacts the cost of goods movement.
