NO Self-Isolation Plans Required from Truck Drivers

BCTA has been communicating any BC COVID-19 requirements for carriers and truck drivers directly with members – this is just a confirmation following rapid changes about cross border self-isolation plan requirements that professional truck drivers crossing into BC from the US do not require a self-isolation plan.

Dave Earle, our president & CEO, provided details directly to members on April 9, 2020, about new requirements for any BC-resident drivers returning to the province from outside Canada to complete and file a 14-day self-isolation plan, following a federal emergency order under the Quarantine Act requiring people entering Canada to self-isolate for 14 days. Truck drivers, though exempt as essential workers from cross border travel restrictions (i.e., quarantines) as long as they are without COVID-19 symptoms, were also originally required to complete a self-isolation plan and self-monitor, effective April 10. See the provincial announcement, here.

However, on April 10, the government clarified that truck drivers are exempt from federal Quarantine Act requirements and do not need to create a self-isolation plan or self isolate.

The self-isolation requirements for returning travellers are here. The exemption for truck drivers and other essential workers is included here. Note that the exemption is only available to workers without any COVID-19 symptoms; if drivers are experiencing symptoms, they will need to report them and be prepared to self-isolate.
