Past due: Although employers theoretically have until November 30, 2018 to adjust practices and training for understanding new Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System 2015 labels and Material Safety Data Sheets, with US manufacturers and distributors switched to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (or “GHS” for short) as of December 1, 2015, affected employers should already have taken steps to ensure worker protection.
December 28, 2015: Increases to US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) fees become effective, to US$7.55 per crossing or US$301.67 per year for a transponder.
December 31, 2015: Members who operate in New Jersey and have not registered topay the state Corporate Business Tax may register their businesses and file the appropriate taxes until this date December 31, 2015. Carriers that come forward are eligible for favourable terms offered under NJ’s Voluntary Disclosure Program.
December 31, 2015: Owners of model year 2008 diesel-fueled Transport Refrigeration Unit engines and TRU generator set equipment must meet the California Air Resources Board’s Airborne Toxic Control Measure TRU Regulation ultra-low-emission TRU in-use performance standard.
January 1, 2016: Qualified motor coach companies are subject to Full Reciprocity Plan requirements as of this date. Here’s some information on calculating pro-rate fees for your first year.
January 10, 2016: Canada Border Services Agency will begin issuing full Administrative Monetary Penalty System penalties to carriers who do not comply with Advance Commercial Information eManifest requirements, ending the six-month educational enforcement period. Empty and in-transit conveyances continue to be exceptions.
June 18, 2017: Drivers of government-permitted oversize/overweight loads continue to be exempt from the usual 30-minute rest break requirement in the US until this date. The exemption was requested by the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association and applies industry-wide.
August 1, 2017: Just a head’s up, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires manufacturer’s to include electronic stability control systems on truck tractors and motor coaches as of this date. There are different lead times for compliance depending on the vehicle, with the first deadline for new three-axle truck tractors manufactured on or after August 1, 2017.
