Flemming Sondergaard Legacy Program
The Flemming Sondergaard Legacy Program Committee and the British Columbia Trucking Association are pleased to have established the Flemming Sondergaard Legacy Program to assist in addressing the current industry human resource shortage.
Flemming Sondergaard owned and operated Collins Manufacturing Company Limited and was active in BCTA for over 40 years. He made a lifetime commitment to the trucking industry and to the education and training of industry employees. Flemming served as a volunteer Director and member of the Executive and numerous committees within BCTA. He also served as Chairman of the British Columbia Institute of Technology from 1987 to 1989.
The first Flemming Sondergaard Memorial Dinner & Reverse Draw was held on October 18, 2006 in Coquitlam; the second was held on October 17, 2007 at the Red Robinson Show Theatre in Coquitlam. The fundraising events were very successful, drawing over 300 people each and sponsorships from very generous organizations and individuals.
With the initial level of support exceeding expectations, the Flemming Sondergaard Legacy Program was established to utlilize funds in advance of the original five-year timeline. Through a training entrance award program, $42,000 was disbursed to support the training of fourteen new industry drivers and technicians in 2007 and 2008. Outreach work included support for the printing and distribution of comprehensive trucking careers information packages, developed by the Canadian Trucking Industry Human Resources Council, to British Columbia career, guidance and vocational counselors, as well as exhibiting at a number of career fairs and organizing meetings with school guidance counselors and school district representatives.
The committee is currently working closely with BCTA in order to support, in Flemming Sondergaard's name, the long-term, industry-driven human resources strategic plan. The committee is working to make effective use of the Legacy Program fund to develop the human capital that our industry requires.
